District Incident Hike

On the 15th of November, 6 scouts from Pinkneys Green went on the District Night Hike. They were Phil Howell, Richard Bennett, Ollie Shell, Greg Joys, Mark Courtier and Morgan Charles. We started in Cookham car park at 10 o'clock. We walked towards Cockmarsh and then up a steep hill to our third base at Winterhill. After doing a game where you had to cross a mat which was like a minefield, we went into the marquee and you could get a drink, a cup of soup and a hot dog, which was great after walking up a very steep hill.

Then we walked to the next base at Bigfrith Common and then onto Butlers Gate. At Butlers Gate we had to get ourselves and a dummy through a spider's web. This was my favourite base. At the next base we had to do a play. Then we walked onto Furze Platt scout hut, by this time most of us were on our last legs!

Now it was off to the metal hippo on the moor. At our next base we had to feel in some boxes and smell some bottles to try and guess what was in them.

We went on to the Furze Platt camp site where we played Pictionary and had a cup of tea and biscuits. Then we walked back to Cookham car park. On the way we had to climb under a fallen fir tree. We got back to Cookham car park at 3:58am. Thanks to Mr and Mrs Howell, Mr Joys and Mr Charles for coming around with us, and to Simon for organizing it

District Cycle Orienteering Event

On Sunday the 22nd of September Cox green scout troop hosted the cycle orienteering event. This was a very enjoyable activity as it tested you both mentally and physically. Although it was an early start (7:30) we soon got in to the cycling pace. After picking Alex Jones up we made our way to the Cox green scout hut. We had to cycle a 24km course in 2 hours. After about two minutes of cycling, Toby my brother realised that he couldn’t cycle his bike, carry the rucksack, read the map, stamp the card and time keep all at the same time. It was hard for him but he finally realised the art of sharing! The morning turned out to be warm and sunny as we went rattling through the trees down ancient Roman and Saxon roads. On the way round we met up with the other two PG teams. This was a very well set course as we didn’t have to follow one route. In many ways it was quite hard, in that you some times had three different routes to choose from. One may have lead to a ten point base which was really close, where as another may have lead to a twenty point base which was twice as far away. On this course there were 14 bases, bases 1 to 9 were worth 10 points and bases 10 to 14 were worth 20 points.

All in all we had a great time and would highly recommend all PG scouts giving it a bash next time. You never know, PG might win!

Speakers Tea Party

On Monday 17th June, Bob, Andrew Wilcox and I went to the Houses of Parliament for the Speaker's Tea party. We went up by train and walked through London, as it was very hot. Once we had been allowed through security we went into the fantastic main hall where we were met by Theresa May's secretary who took us along to the Speakers house which was very grand, with lots of impressive ornaments and paintings. We stood around talking for a bit until we met the Chief Scout who talked a bit about scouting. We headed on through for the drinks and very nice food. We listened to some speeches by the Speaker, MP's and Chief Scout, before we had our photo taken with Theresa May, the Speaker and the Chief Scout. Mrs May gave us a tour before getting us tickets for the gallery at the Commons. We watched a debate on bankruptcy, in the very impressive House of Commons. Then we caught a cab and got a train home. It was a great day, which will stick in my memory

Icelandic Jamboree Weekend Camp

On the Friday 17th May the Icelandic Jamboree Unit set up camp at Henley Dragon Boating Club. The troop pitched their tents and opened up their bags for the weekend. After we had set up our tents we made our way to the main mess tent, by this time it was approaching ten O'clock in the evening. After discussing the activities for the weekend we made our way to one of the on-site buildings as it was beginning to rain quite heavily. After a quick quiz the rain had died down and we were told that we could make our way back to our tents and could talk for a while if we wanted.

The next morning we were woken up at around 7 or 8 in the morning, we then used our trangias to boil some water for tea, coffee or hot chocolate. After our hot drink and some cereal we were informed of the hike we were going to undertake, it was going to be a 'short' hike until about lunchtime. As we walked in from the tiring hike we took out our plates and cutlery and went to get lunch. After we finished lunch we went open topped canoeing, we went for a short trip up the river and then back down to the site. When we had packed away the canoes we had some free time and then we were sent out in groups to walk around Henley and complete the quiz type questions that were set, but it was mainly just to get some ice cream and have a break. When the groups got back it was time to cook dinner, which was spaghetti bolognaise, this was quite an interesting prospect on a trangia! When all the plates, cutlery and trangias were washed and cleaned it was time for the campfire. Each patrol had to do a stunt, song or sketch, some not as good as others! As the campfire came to a close we made our way to one of the centre's buildings where Bruce, the Unit leader, had set up a projector and laptop to show the planet of the apes. After the film was finished it was time for some well-deserved shuteye.

The next morning we woke up about 8ish and had to prepare a cooked breakfast on the trangias, this was also no mean feat! After cleaning the egg and remnants of breakfast off the plates it was time for some dragon boating, using a similar route as for the canoeing. After getting extensively splashed it was time to pack up camp. After packing up our gear it was the de-briefing and then back home. I had a very enjoyable time at the weekend and am thoroughly looking forward to the trip to Iceland.

Troop Camp - Cooking Competition

I congratulate all the boys for their high standards of hygiene and ingenuity. The teamwork within the patrols was excellent and each Patrol Leader should be very pleased with his results, which were very close.

Trevor Bateman helped me by inspecting the equipment and general layout of kitchen area. Thank you Trevor.

Without detailing menus and recipes (Which I'm sure Simon could produce if requested) I know PG scouts will feed themselves very well at future camps if they keep these standards. Suffice it to say all the food was tasty and well presented. The one hurdle they have to overcome is timing. As any mother will admit, setting the meal on the table at the precise moment everyone wants to eat is not easy. Well-done scouts.

Scouts District Football Competition

This years competition was held last Sunday the 28th April at Altwood School. PG entered two teams, "A" Team - Captain-Oliver Blumfield, members Oliver Shell, Andy Tagg, Andy Wilcox, Luke Hoggarth, Harry Ayre and James Wheeler. "B" Team Captain-Peter Morris, members Richard Bennet, Tom Bennet, Matt Collins, Graham Wolfe, Jonny Tagg and Miles Willet. We played on proper 5-a-side tarmac pitches

The A team did very well coming 3rd. Even though Andy Tagg was carried off in one of the earlier games with a broken arm and badly swollen ankle (not sure if it was broken) We would all like to wish Andy a swift recovery.

Trip to Reading Laser Quest

On Friday the 1st of February over 40 P.G Scouts went to laser quest. Most of the troop met up in the Scout hall at 6 o'clock. Then at 6.15 we went in separate cars to Reading laser quest. After a few minutes the howl troop was at the destination.

First up to play was the blue team and the green team, green team were fist in it was a enjoyable mach but in the end green team won. After that it was black vs., red and black won, then red against blue, again blue lost. Finally it was green v. black and green team won. In the end the P.G scouts all had fun.

On the way back the two Hopkins twins lost there coats and Bob had to go back and find them. Most of the troop was dropped off at their houses except for 18 who were dropped off at the scout Hall for the under 12 training weekend.

Scout Award Training Course

When we got back from laser quest we went for a night hike and it took about one hour and a half. We got back and we were really tired. We had a hotdog and a drink. We were going to play stinger but we were to tired so we watched a bit of TV and went to bed. When we woke up we had a wash and a breakfast cooked by Miles and Robert. We did some training, which included lighting Tilley's and primus stove and first aid including learning DRABC and Resussi Annie and had lunch we then did fire lighting in the woods and cooking. We came back to the hall, had tea, before we cleared the hall. We played a game of stinger. Thanks goes to Simon for organising the weekend

Trip to see Aladdin

For the first Troop meeting of 2002, we meet at Farm road shops, where we were told which mini bus we were to go in. The journey to Reading we did not get stuck in any traffic and were there in plenty of time.

We were up stairs and had the first ten rows in the middle. The actual pantomime was very good. Wishie got the audience going, we had to shout every time he came on stage. The dame was also very good, she has some very outrages outfits.

In the interval we all went down stairs where we were given the ice cream that we had ordered.

The second half was also good, we all had to join in a song at the end. It finished at 10pm when we all went back to the mini buses and got dropped off at home. I had a very enjoyable time; thank you goes to the leaders for organising the event.
